    topologize:

On my newsfeed on Facebook this morning are the opinions of two individuals, one who thinks that we don’t need to control guns and one who thinks that we need to stop blaming mental illness for massacres like this.

Gun control works fairly well in the rest of the industrialized world which…

I was just talking about this with a coworker this morning. And the thing is that that very sentence minus the “from a wealthy family” part that could describe me.

I don’t condone what this person did. I’m not saying that at all. But there is one thing that is clear to me and it is this: We do not know everything there is to know about mental illnesses and the way the brain works. We have not begun to understand why people are the way they are. Guns have always been there and will always be there. Why are situations like this occurring more and more? I think it has something to do with our lack of knowledge on the warning signs and getting people the help they need. People who are quiet and reserved are not weird and disturbed. They are people that maybe need some extra attention. Instead of teaching children to pick on those children at school that are different we need to teach them to accept those children. We need to start at the source. Or at least try. Bullying (now I’m not saying this kid was bullied I don’t know anything about him) is at an all time high. Teenage suicides are at an all time high. I mean obviously there is something wrong when an 11 year old thinks that there is no other way out of his/her sadness and despair other than killing themselves.

I know a lot of us here on tumblr know a lot about mental disorders. There are many of us here that suffer from anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and more. Many of us know what it’s like to be picked on incessantly to the point of tears. We know what it’s like to feel out of place in a crowded room, to feel as if no one notices our pain. I think its a huge reason as to why a lot of us form such strong bonds with each other.

There is nothing that can give those people their children back. And we may never fully piece together why the person did what they did. But we can look at patterns. If you look at something like this and immediately think “WE NEED MORE GUN CONTROL!” I think you’re wrong. You may not agree with me but I think you’re wrong. This doesn’t have to do with politics and gun control. This has to do with the mental well being of everyone.

I know some of you won’t even read this post because there aren’t any boobs attached to it. I also want to state that everything I wrote is solely my opinion and is not attached to anyone else.
